Home CNI FAQs What is VOIP?

What is VOIP?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is simply phone service delivered through your internet connection instead of from a traditional phone company. The Internet Protocol (IP)  was originally designed for data networking and has since been adapted for the transmission of voice traffic over the IP-based network.

Does it save me money?

Yes. Since VoIP can be bundled with your internet service, it saves you the money you were paying to have two separate services.  One low monthly payment includes your High-Speed Internet AND your telephone service. And because VoIP calls can be placed across the Internet., there's no  extra charge for long-distance calls and no limit on how many minutes you can use.

how do i get voip?

Bring us a copy of your latest phone bill that shows your name, address, phone number, and account number with your current carrier. It takes about 10 business days to complete the migration process.

How much does it cost?

The monthly service charge for residential VoIP service is $20.00 plus sales tax. There is an initial charge for the first two months (pre-paid) and a one-time installation fee of $49.95.

Can I receive collect calls on your service?

No.

Does VOIP work during a power outage?

Not unless your Wireless Subscriber module, router/switch and telephone are connected to some sort of battery back-up or generator.

Will it work with my home security systems or Satellite TV service?

We cannot guarantee that our VoIP service will be compatible with security systems or satellite television services.

Are there any hidden fees or taxes?

No. You will always see your monthly service charge plus your local sales tax on your telephone bill.

All local and long-distance calls are unlimited within the United States and Canada are FREE.  However, international calls are not free and will be charged at a rate per minute.  Please see our International Calling chart below for current rates.

All 411 calls for information are charged $1.00 per call.

How will I get my Phone bill?

It will show up as an item on your monthly Cascade Networks statement.

Can I use my existing phones?

As long as your current phones support tone-dialing, they will work with your VoIP system. Our system does not support the use of rotary or "pulse dial" telephones.  (Most phones manufactured in the last 30 years are tone-dialing.)

Can I use my existing internet service?

Yes. As long as you already have a Cascade Networks Internet connection, you can bundle the VoIP  service. VoIP uses a very small amount of your existing bandwidth when you're on the phone.

Is there a contract requirement?

No.

IS VOIP reliable?

Yes. Our VoIP infrastructure has been established with redundant paths and multiple telephone servers across cities to ensure reliability for all telephone calls. Our servers are setup to ensure that you will get a quality phone connection using your existing internet connection.

Can I turn off my computer?

Yes. Your computer and your phone will have different connections to a switch or router, depending on your setup, and do not affect each other.

Can I keep my phone number?

Yes. Number Transfer or Local Number Portability (LNP) allows you to keep your local telephone number or Internet telephone service phone number when switching service providers. (Some exceptions in Kalama)
